Pete Coutts

Due for release in October 4th 2016, Northern Sky is the eagerly awaited debut solo album from Aberdeen musician Pete Coutts (mandolin, guitar, vocals). This collection of original Doric songs and tunes draws from the cultural heritage and language of the North-East whilst keeping its roots planted firmly in the contemporary sound of traditional Scottish music.

A wonderful debut, Northern Sky is produced by award winning multi-instrumentalist Ali Hutton and Old Blind Dogs’ Jonny Hardy, and features a number of Scotland’s finest musicians including:
Ali Hutton (pipes, whistles, guitar), Jonnie Hardy (fiddle), Brian McAlpine (accordion), Martin O’Neill (bodhran).

The album weaves its way through a rich tapestry of tunes and tales inspired by traditional life in North-East Scotland’s fishing and farming communities. From the driving rhythm of ‘Sail & Oar’ to the heartfelt bothy ballad ‘Will Ye Byde’, the album showcases Pete’s passionate earthy vocals along with uplifting pieces ‘Allathumpach’ and In & Oot’ to the dark funk of Under the Table’ where Pete’s mandolin playing and ability to write memorable tunes come to the fore. The album title track is a beautiful and skilful arrangement of Nick Drake’s ‘Northern Sky’, lending it a haunting Celtic feel.

Pete has been a prominent force on the Aberdeen music scene for over a decade, performing with many notable bands such as the critically acclaimed Catford with long-term musical partner Steve Crawford and Old Blind Dogs’ Davy Cattanach and Jonnie Hardy. More recently, he has been busy with Celtic-Americana act ‘Ballad of Crows who have extensively toured Europe with their eponymous album which featured in the Telegraph’s ‘Top 25 folk albums of 2015’. Pete has also done session work for lots of other great artists including Jenny Sturgeon, The Jellyman’s Daughter, Tryptamines, Death Let Her and of course Best Girl Athlete.

Blues And More Again – “a worthy addition to the cultural library of NE Scotland“,

Ian F Benzie – “A fine debut album… tunes that surprise and strong vocals full of imagery… more please”
